Longmen Caves, very near Luoyang, a UNESCO heritage site, host more than 100,000 images of Buddha, many of them disfigured in the early XXth century by Western collectors. The main carvings are less old than in Datong (500-600 AD) and the round, relatively fat, statues with exquisitely chiselled clothes, reflect the beauty standards of the Tang dynasty. Our (very knowledgeable) French speaking guide also tells us that one of the four ways to get merits and become a Buddha is to build statues (that explains why!)-the other three being burning incense, reciting sutras and exposing sermons.
