Luoyang (Henan)

Luoyang, second largest city in Henan, 13 times capital city of China, near the South bank of the Yellow River. The glorious time of the city dates back from the Zhous (1050 BC) and lasted until the capital city was moved to Kaifeng (Song Dynasty- 10th century AD). Now, the city is mostly famous for its peony festival- which opened the day we arrived.

The White Horse Temple is the oldest Buddhist Temple in China- it was there in year 64 AD that two Indian monks living in Afghanistan were invited to teach Buddhism to Chinese people after the emperor dreamt about Sakyamuni.

This scene represents a famous sermon given by Sakyamuni where he uttered no words and only his old disciple Kasyapa (on his left here) understood him. This teaching and knowledge transmission method from heart to heart helped Kasyapa found the zen school.
